Hello, I’m Amanda!
I am curious; the urge to travel has not diminished with the passing years. After experiencing one place I yearn to taste another: the different cultures, different cuisines, different peoples, and the varied landscapes with the various ways of crossing them. And the colours ‒ like that terrific sunset I remember on the snowy steppe of northern Kazakhstan: orange and pink spikes spreading out all over the western horizon of the infinite plains. Many of the 65+ breed of travellers have a similar urge, yet few of us document our adventures with our triumphs and disasters. I now can. I am eminently endowed with time and leisure, unconfined by specific holiday periods dictated by offices or schools. A blissful state to be in. Thus, globe-trotting in my golden years continues in abundance. My working life saw me teaching and researching in several different places, including the UK, Iceland, China and Kazakhstan. Adventurous travel in my youth included: trekking through the jungles of Papua New Guinea; crossing the Sahara Desert by tandem; sailing the Indian Ocean by galleon, and the Atlantic by yacht. Today’s travels are somewhat more sedate. But exciting enough. And fun. Enjoy.

Informative and entertaining travelogues

It’s like a book, I think, this bloomin’ world,
Which you can read and care for just so long,
But presently you feel that you will die
Unless you get the page you’re readin’ done,
An’ turn another—likely not so good;
But what you’re after is to turn ’em all
(from Rudyard Kipling, ‘Sestina of the Tramp-Royal’ (1896))
